Andreia Marujo

Nonresident Research Associate

Andreia Marujo holds a BA in African Studies and an MA in International Heritage Management, specialising in the intersections of heritage, memory, and politics. Her academic work examines how cultural heritage and public memory function as arenas of contestation and identity formation in both European and global contexts.

Her MA dissertation, “Contested Heritage: The Memorial to the Enslaved People and the Politics of Memory in Lisbon,”used discourse analysis to explore how public debates on slavery, colonialism, and commemoration reflect deeper struggles over national identity, pluralism, and postcolonial memory in Portugal. This research aligns closely with the Observatory’s focus on how cultural conflict and illiberal narratives shape democratic life.

Marujo is particularly interested in contributing to projects on memory politics, contested heritage, and the instrumentalisation of history within contemporary culture wars. She is keen to learn more about the Observatory’s collaborative model and how her expertise may fit its ongoing work.
