Dr. Werner Pascha

Werner Pascha is an Emeritus Professor of East Asian Economic Studies/Japan and Korea at the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST) of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. He served as the director of the institute several times. He obtained his doctoral degree in economics from Freiburg University in Germany in 1986 and a habilitation in 1991. In addition, he studied at the London School of Economics and Nagoya University in Japan. Over time, he has received invitations from numerous institutions and universities in Japan, Korea, and Singapore. Among other functions, he currently serves as the Vice President of the Japanese-German Centre Berlin since 2015. He was honoured with the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. He has extensively published on the political economy of institutional change in Japan and Korea, as well as on the international political-economic relations of the region. One critical area of his interest is in the co-evolution of economic institutions and performance with the organization of political processes, which includes supra-national or regional arrangements, as well as quasi-federal structures at the national level.
